The boat has become a tourist attraction, with passersby stopping to take pictures and a nearby restaurant using it to advertise cold beer. But county code enforcement wants the boat removed from the public right of way. John Fleming called Better Call Behnken for help after Pinellas County Code Enforcement recently sent him a violation notice and said it was his responsibility to remove the 11,pound, foot boat.
The boat is named Shenanigans. Fleming said that is fitting because that is exactly what he calls the violation saga. Hours after his interview with Better Call Behnken, the county called him to change its tune. When he finally reached the officer, he was told he was being charged anyway. Consumer Investigator Shannon Behnken reached out to county officials, and hours later, Fleming said the county called with good news.
They found the real, current owner and would be sending the violation notice to that guy. A county spokesman said the code enforcement officer is new to their department and was not familiar with all of the databases they use to track down owners.
