He served as trustee from until his passing. Over four terms, he focused on public health, education, environmental sustainability, and consumer protection, authoring and sponsoring more than bills. John championed legislation to increase transparency in the tobacco industry, reduce youth smoking, and expand access to preventative care. He prioritized education by reducing tuition costs for military personnel at Midwestern State University and supporting measures to make higher education accessible.
His environmental initiatives promoted renewable energy, water conservation, and sustainable practices. John also worked to protect consumers, particularly the elderly, by advocating for stricter penalties for deceptive trade practices. His collaborative approach earned respect across party lines. Yet, public recognition never defined himβhe believed in giving back and doing what was right. Those who knew him remember his quiet generosity and sharp intellect.
This passion project reflected his lifelong love of organic gardening. John is preceded in death by his mother and father, his sister, Jean Ann Hirschi, and his late wife, Nancy Rapp Hirschi.
