It can be painful and sometimes lead to bleeding after you poo. Anal fissures usually go away with the help of special creams.
If they don't, we can inject a relaxant into the muscle around your anus to start the healing process. Injections for anal fissures are normally carried out under local anaesthetic, which means we'll numb the area of injection.
Your consultant will inject a relaxant into the muscle around your anus. This may feel a little uncomfortable but the procedure is very quick.
The relaxant will begin to work over the next three days, helping to relax the muscle and reduce the amount of pain you feel. It will also increase blood flow to the fissure, so it can heal naturally. These injections are normally carried out if other anal fissure treatments haven't worked.
There isn't any special preparation involved, so you won't need to limit your food or drink intake beforehand.
