A surge in scam activity has prompted the Palm Beach Police Department to warn residents to be cautious. The department in a Wednesday afternoon alert said scammers are increasingly posing as representatives of government agencies, tech support services, or trusted businesses to target residents.
William Rothrock told The Daily News. The Apple ID scam operates through spam texts, which urge people to call a specified number. Once they are on the line, the scammers attempt to persuade them to install malware on their cellphone, which could compromise their personal and financial information, Rothrock said. The cryptocurrency scheme usually involves calls, texts, or emails claiming a person's bank account is being investigated for narcotics activity, Rothrock said.
The scammers then tell the person to provide payment in bitcoin to resolve it. In its alert, the town warned that cryptocurrency transactions are often "irreversible. If someone asks you to send them money, always verify their identity and the reason for the request before sending any funds. If you cannot confirm its legitimacy, treat it as a potential scam. No legitimate organization, the town continued, will ask to be paid with gift cards over the phone or online, or ask people to click on text links to download software on their cellphone.
The town is urging residents to contact Town Police at with any scam concerns or if they have been victimized by one.
