One of a handful of Lusophone portuguese speaking countries in Africa, Mozambique has braved successfully through a colonist past courtesy of the Portuguese, being one of the discoveries of Vasco de Gama and through a major civil war only ending in Now, however they stand as one of the countries to watch in Africa, and are considered as the preferred investment centre in Africa.
Although the most common language in Mozambique is Portuguese, there are also a number of other indigenous languages spoken in the country such as Swahili, Sena, Ndau, Makhuwa and Shangaan. Business yet again brought me to the lively Mozambique, more specifically to the capital Maputo. I decided to extend my stay there and thought it would be nice to have a short getaway by myself to one of the islands, giving me a chance to see something other than city life.
After a couple of days in Maputo, I did just that and spent the weekend at a small, nearby Island of Inhaca. It was picture perfect; picture a rural village, set on this beautiful Island with pure white sands and pristine blue waters. It is not too commercial or touristy, and still has a lot of regular people living there. One of the beaches, Santa Maria has the most beautiful beaches which are ideal for any water sport fanatics it was unfortunate I had just relaxed my hair, eish it is tough.
This place was ideal for some good old soul-searching, and it did give me a chance to make some important decisions. After spending a weekend on the island, I wanted to get a feel for the flavour of the country as a whole not just the business environment , and there is no better place than Maputo. It has a major Brazilian vibe, and it was a lot of fun going to one of the Brazilian Karaoke bars with one of my colleagues from our subsidiary in Mozambique.
I really did not know most of the songs but is it not always fun to watch karaoke, whether it is a language you understand or not? On my last night I decided to venture out on my own to one of the popular spots along the Maputo coast and two restaurants away from my hotel which is not really ideal for swimming.
