For several days Ruth slept in their red four-poster bed, the home of her friends seeming at once familiar and intoxicatingly strange. This idealised, paradisiacal world away from the hustle and bustle that leads you to feel calm, luxurious and sensual delight.

In the bedroom where the exhibition began, with its four-poster bed, are two wooden paintings by Bordeaux-Groult. One seemingly depicting a hearth, the other of a potion-like container, they suggest home as a place of both comfort and alchemy, of the known and the unknowable.
