Examiner Prof. This thesis offers a closer look at the use of photography in contemporary art. It outlines the history of the medium, shows influential movements and points out differentiations, which helped to foster its development. One has to keep in mind that the history of art is by no means simple and linear. My approach in this work is to present and discuss works of art that, utilized the medium of photography, in order to outline a red thread through the history of photography in contemporary arts.
The exemplary works by wellrenowned artists in this paper help to illustrate my point and offer a useful retrospective for upcoming artists and everyone interested in the history of photography. Accompanied by historic facts and comparisons between the works, it becomes evident that many artists drew inspiration from their predecessors. The goal of this paper is to give a sense of what is possible using the medium of photography inside the field of contemporary art.
