The National Federation of State High School Associations NFHS , which governs high school athletics around the country, has announced a set of changes to high school volleyball rules for the fall season. One important addition to the rule book, which the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association WIAA can adopt, is that multiple contacts by one player attempting to play the ball will now be allowed on second contact if the next contact is by a teammate on the same side of the net.
The idea of the change is to eliminate judgment calls by referees and avoid advantages for offending teams. The NFHS also ruled that textured balls, which are relatively common in boys volleyball in other states, will be allowed for high school associations beginning in That would remove some restrictions on shape and size of panels on game balls.
The WIAA has not officially declared one side or another in the change. Other rule changes include more permissions for numbers on jerseys and no need for the officials to measure number lengths.
