After 12 years of no trade, the old Manly Civic Club now The Manly Club sprang back to life in June off the back of a commercial property deal.
For the majority of clubs, that would sadly be the end of the story β but not so on this occasion, thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers and a committed Chief Executive in Ron Malm who worked for more than a decade to get the Club back open.
Key to its success was a lucrative property deal which has seen the construction of 38 one, two and three-bedroom apartments built on top of a brand-new clubβ¦". His wife Clarissa moved back to Manly with her three daughters in and built a substantial residence named Auckland Villa on the corner of West Promenade and Gilbert Street. By then, Robert and Walter Sellar had bought the Auckland Villa site and leased the vacant site to Stanley Gillingham, a local taxicab proprietor, from February The drive-in service station and garage contained a repair shop, parking space for 50 cars and an office.
Gillingham purchased the site in and owned it until , co-managing the garage with his daughter Joyce Stewart and her husband Ron, a mechanic. The former Auckland Garage was later sublet for various uses, including as a dry cleaner, Globe surf wear store, and an art gallery.
